Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages
The IFL provides teaching Latin Medical Terminology in the first academic year in the field of General Medicine and in the first and third academic year of Dentistry (including a study programme taught in English), and interdisciplinary study (Biomedicine) and is focused on acquiring the grammatical rules and principles of lexicology needed for the study of medicine and for clinical practice.
Teaching of foreign languages (English, German) is provided in the third academic year in the field of General Medicine and the second year in the field of Dentistry and is focused on improving professional medical performance both in written and oral forms.
Teachers of foreign languages conduct professional seminars for PhD. study. Teaching staff of the IFL is involved in selection of students who are interested in study stays and internships abroad by testing their skills in a foreign language (English, German).
The Institute constantly develops contacts with domestic and foreign partners and institutions within Staff Mobility for Teaching.
Teachers are involved in writing professional articles, in producing teaching materials and textbooks focused on specific foreign-language preparation of medical students and provide professional consultations in the field of specific foreign-language communication and technical terminology. They actively participate in domestic and foreign conferences with presenting the results of their scientific activities.
HISTORY OF IMTFL
The origin of the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages dates back to 1953. In that year the general university Department of Foreign Languages was established. Ten years later this centralized institution was transformed into autonomous departments of languages, where the departments of languages at both the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy Comenius University existed under the joint management until 1981. After seven years of coexistence within rectorate grouping of foreign languages there occurred a re-split into separate departments. The year 1991 was the turning point when a department of languages was established at the Faculty of Medicine Comenius University and it was in operation under the name of the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) until August 2022. Since September 2022 it has been in operation under the name the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages (IMTFL).
LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
I. Slovak students: Doctor’s study programmes – General Medicine, Dentistry
1. Latin medical terminology courses:
- students of FM CU, GM Year 1 winter semester (WS) EC and summer semester (SS) exam
- students of FM CU, Dentistry Year 1 WS EC and SS exam
- students of interdisciplinary study programmes – biomedical physics (Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics CU) Year 1 WS exam
2. Foreign language course for specific purposes (English) focused on the prospective study and professional needs; GM and Dentistry - Year 2 WS EC and SS exam
3. German language for GM students, Year 4 or 5 – as compulsory elective courses: in WS – EC, in SS - EC.
II. International students studying in English study programme – General Medicine and Dentistry
1. Latin medical terminology courses:
- students of FM CU, GM Year 1 WS EC and SS exam
- students of FM CU, Dentistry Year 1 WS EC and SS exam
2. Courses of Slovak language as a foreign language – the first five semesters. The first four semesters EC and the fifth semester exam.
3. German language for GM students, Year 4 or 5 – as compulsory elective courses: in WS – EC, in SS - EC.
III. PhD. study programme
Language instruction for specific purposes for PhD. students of FMED CU (English language) lasting 1 or 2 terms or in the form of individual consultations. The final examination of PhD. students is conducted by a committee.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Scientific research and publication activities of the IMTFL FMED CU are focused on the following fields:
- Terminological research of current and historic medical vocabulary.
- Lexicological analysis of the antic professional literature in medicine.
- Didactic-methodological aspects of teaching the English and German languages as a means of professional comunication.
- Research in teaching the Slovak language as a foreign language.
These research activities result in publishing scientific studies in both domestic and foreign professional journals.
CONDUCTING LECTURES AND DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES
The teaching staff of IMTFL participate in study visits and research fellowships at partner universities; they reciprocally invite colleagues from these partner workplaces to IMTFL. Concurrently, they actively participate in scientific conferences and professional workshops. These activities are aimed to gain new knowledge and experience, to establish contacts for possible further cooperation, as well as their implementation into pedagogical activities and scientific research.
