Fostering Critical Thinking Skills

In a collaborative effort between the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages (IMTFL) at the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University Bratislava, Université de Bordeaux, and University of Göttingen, this intensive, project-based course united students from these partner universities. Through a blend of virtual sessions and an in-person symposium, students explored critical global topics such as sustainability, innovation, and equality. Using a challenge-based education approach, the course encouraged participants to research and create Ted-Talk-style presentations on their selected issues.

The course was structured into three main phases: an initial online collaboration where students from the partner universities selected and researched a topic; an in-person symposium hosted at Comenius University in Bratislava; and a final debriefing phase, focusing on intercultural exchanges and reflections. By engaging in this collaborative, international setting, participants were expected to hone their critical thinking, presentation, and intercultural communication skills, preparing them for complex real-world challenges. The lecturers included:

  • Tomáš Hamar (IMTFL), Comenius University Bratislava
  • Stanislav Kováč (IMTFL), Comenius University Bratislava
  • Johann Fischer (ZESS), University of Göttingen
  • Laura Syms (ZESS), University of Göttingen
  • Smita Raman-Gyetvai (ZESS), University of Göttingen
  • Alexandra Reynolds, Université de Bordeaux
  • Joanne Plaskett, Université de Bordeaux

The course ran from October to December 2024, with the in-person symposium taking place from November 25 to 30 in Bratislava.
