Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages

The origin of the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages dates back to 1953. In that year the general university Department of Foreign Languages was established. Ten years later this centralized institution was transformed into autonomous departments of languages, where the departments of languages at both the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy Comenius University existed under the joint management until 1981. After seven years of coexistence within rectorate grouping of foreign languages there occurred a re-split into separate departments. The year 1991 was the turning point when a department of languages was established at the Faculty of Medicine Comenius University and it was in operation under the name of the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) until August 2022. Since September 2022 it has been in operation under the name the Institute of Medical Terminology and Foreign Languages (IMTFL).

I. Slovak students: Doctor’s study programmes – General Medicine, Dentistry

1. Latin medical terminology courses:

• students of the Faculty of Medicine CU, exam in the summer semester (SS) of Year 1 for GM; evaluation credit test (EC) in the winter semester (WS) of Year 1 and EC in the SS of Year 3 for dentistry students 
• students of interdisciplinary study programmes – biomedical physics (Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics CU, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport CU), exam in the WS of Year 1

2. Foreign language course for specific purposes (English) focused on the prospective study and professional needs; GM - EC in the WS of Year 2, exam in the SS of Year 2; dentistry students: EC in the WS of Year 2.

3. German language for GM students, Year 4 or 5 – as compulsory elective courses: in WS – EC, in SS - EC.

II. International students studying in English study programme – General Medicine

1. Latin medical terminology courses – GM students: exam in the WS of Year 2; dentistry students: EC in the WS of Year 1 and in the SS of Year 3. 

2. Courses of Slovak language as a foreign language – the first four terms, exam after the fourth term.

III. PhD. study programme

Language instruction for specific purposes for PhD. students of FMED CU lasting 1 or 2 terms or in the form of individual consultations; English language course (compulsory course) and German language course (elective course). The final examination of PhD. students is conducted by a committee.

Scientific research and publication activities of the IMTFL FMED CU are focused on the following fields:

• Terminological research of current and historic medical vocabulary.
• Lexicological analysis of the antic professional literature in medicine.
• Didactic-methodological aspects of teaching the English and German languages as a means of professional comunication.
• Research in teaching the Slovak language as a foreign language.

These research activities result in publishing scientific studies in both domestic and foreign professional journals.

The teaching staff of IMTFL participate in study visits and research fellowships at partner universities; they reciprocally invite colleagues from these partner workplaces to IFL. Concurrently, they actively participate in scientific conferences and professional workshops. These activities are aimed to gain new knowledge and experience, to establish contacts for possible further cooperation, as well as their implementation into pedagogical activities and scientific research.
