Schedule of the lectures
1. | Introduction to teaching. Transport processes – active and passive transport, diffusion (1st and 2nd Fick's law), osmosis, filtration, adsorption. Resting and action membrane potential - generation and propagation of action potential, myelinated vs. unmyelinated fiber, graded potential vs. action potential, heart action potentials. |
2. | Biomechanics of blood circulation - physical laws related to blood flow, pressures, flow rate, resistance, blood flow, elastic effect, pulse wave, blood pressure measurement (methods: auscultatory, oscillometric, ultrasound). |
3. | Electrical diagnostic methods (ECG, EEG, ECoG, ERG, EMG, EGG). |
4. | Radioactivity - laws, units, half-life (physical, biological, effective), natural and artificial radioactivity. Types of alpha, beta, and gamma decay. Interactions of ionising radiation with matter. |
5. | X-ray radiation. Biological effects of ionizing radiation, protection against ionizing radiation. Detectors of ionising radiation. |
6. | Laws of light propagation in an optical environment. Biophysics of visual perception. Optical and electron microscopy. |
7. | Sound and ultrasound – properties. Imaging using ultrasound. |
8. | Electromagnetic spectrum, non-ionizing radiation - light, infrared (Stefan-Boltzmann law, Wien displacement law). Electric current - direct current, alternating current, measurement, effects of current, safety (microshock, macroshock), faradic and galvanic currents. |
9. | Imaging methods in medicine (X-ray, CT, MR, PET, SPECT). |
10. | Fundamentals of mechanics (speed, acceleration, acting forces). Effects of mechanical and acoustic factors on the organism, sedimentation. |
11. | Biomechanics of movement, principle of lever, mechanical properties of tissues, Hooke's law. Biophysics of auditory perception. |
12. | Biomechanics of respiration - respiratory function, air flow - pressure gradient, respiratory resistances, retraction forces, surface tension, pneumothorax, alveolar pressure, interpleural pressure, diffusion rate, partial pressures, solubility of gases in the blood. Information about the exam. |
