Paediatrics - Summer Practice
Summer Practice in Paediatrics for 5th year
The compulsory summer practice in Paediatrics is an integral part of the General Medicine programme for 5th-year students. Completing the practice is a prerequisite for progression to the 6th year of study. Further information regarding the summer practice is available on the FMCU website.
During the summer practice, students will actively participate in the daily routine of a paediatric ward, and thus it cannot be completed in adult wards, general practitioner clinics for children and adolescents, or specialist paediatric outpatient clinics. However, the practice can be undertaken in any paediatric ward, regardless of hospital type (including local hospitals) or subspecialty (e.g. specialised wards other than those of the Department of Paediatrics at NÚDCH, including surgical and neonatology wards).
Summer Practice at the Department of Paediatrics, LFUK and NÚDCH in Bratislava
English-speaking students can complete their summer practice in Slovakia at the Department of Paediatrics, LFUK and NÚDCH in Bratislava during the summer months (end of June – July – August). However, a good understanding of Slovak is recommended to fully benefit from the experience. A maximum of 8 students are accepted per practice period (approximately 40 students in total throughout the summer). If interested, please contact the Office Administrator of the Department of Paediatrics, LFUK and NÚDCH well in advance (Mgr. Petra Patráš, 02/59371 209, Detska.Klinikanudch.eu).
Summer practice at our department is only available during the summer months.
Alternative Placement Options
Students may also complete their summer practice at paediatric wards within NÚDCH in Bratislava other than the Department of Paediatrics (e.g. neurology, ENT, dermatology etc.). These departments should be contacted directly for information and availability (contacts at www.nudch.eu). The number of placements offered is at the discretion of each department.
Summer practice completed abroad in paediatric wards (through exchange programs or in the home countries of English-speaking students) is also accepted, provided it meets the minimum duration requirements outlined in the program.
Practice completed outside the summer months is also acceptable (at institutions other than the Department of Paediatrics LFUK and NÚDCH).
Administrative Requirements
The required administrative process for starting a summer practice at any NÚDCH department is detailed (in Slovak) at the following link, which also includes the necessary forms: https://nudch.eu/povinna-letna-prax
In short:
- A student's general practitioner needs to sign a form confirming their good health.
- Another form is a request to complete the summer practice at NÚDCH.
- Both forms must be sent to the designated office to process and prepare an agreement.
- Important: Confirm your placement with your chosen department before submitting your request to the NÚDCH administration.
The administrative procedures for completing the summer practice at other healthcare facilities are determined by each individual institution.
Awarding Credits
Credits for the summer practice in Paediatrics (AIS) are awarded upon submission of a Confirmation form to the Office Administrator of the Department of Paediatrics, LFUK and NÚDCH (in person or by email). Please do not send confirmations to teachers or the Head of Department. We recommend sending confirmations as soon as possible after completing the summer practice to ensure timely credit registration in AIS before 6th-year registration.
This applies to confirmations for summer practice completed abroad as well.
